Good news for Plett drivers! Construction has finally begun on the long-awaited traffic circle at the intersection of the N2 and Beacon Road. This R100 million project is designed to improve safety and ease congestion, a major concern for this busy area.

Every year, thousands of holidaymakers flock to Plettenberg Bay, a popular beach destination fondly nicknamed "Plett." With its mountains, white sand beaches, and crystal-blue water, Plett is a top local tourist spot. This influx creates periods of heavy traffic, despite the town's relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The scenery east of the intersection boasts some of South Africa's best coastline and indigenous forest, further adding to the area's popularity. However, it's also home to two major shopping centers and the primary school, leading to significant traffic congestion.

The project has been in the works for seven years, and with a 10-month construction timeline, completion by the December holiday season is a big question mark. Motorists heading to Plett for the holidays may encounter some delays.

Sanral, the South African National Roads Agency, is behind the project. They say the new traffic circle, also referred to as an ellipse due to its oval shape, will address the high accident rate at the intersection, which has tragically seen at least one fatality.

The design includes dedicated eastbound through lanes, dedicated left-turn lanes into and out of Beacon Way, and double lanes for westbound traffic entering the circle and joining N2 eastbound traffic. This should significantly improve traffic flow. Residents hope the new traffic circle will ease congestion, allowing them to spend more time enjoying the beautiful beaches and less time stuck in traffic.

While the new traffic circle promises a safer and more efficient future for Plett drivers, the impact on this year's holiday traffic remains to be seen.
