From Family Home to Boutique Vineyard
In the quiet, lower valley of The Crags, a new sound is punctuating the stillness: the celebratory pop of a cork. Whiskey Creek Wines has officially unveiled its trio of handcrafted Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) bubblies, marking a sophisticated new chapter for this family-run estate.
At the helm is award-winning winemaker Anton Smal, a pioneer in the region known for his philosophy of restraint. At Whiskey Creek, there are no shortcuts. By using minimal intervention, Smal allows the mineral-rich, gravelly soil and the cool coastal climate of the Garden Route to speak for themselves. The result? Wines with tension, freshness, and a distinct elegance that reflects the "purity of the site."
A Family Vision Rooted in Home
Long before the first vines were ever planted, this estate served simply as the Wilson family home. When they eventually decided to transform the land into a vineyard, they didn't follow a typical commercial blueprint; they followed their hearts. This personal touch is evident in their choice of cultivars, such as the Chenin Blanc, which was planted as a tribute to their mother’s love for the varietal. They also leaned into the spirit of celebration by producing MCC, simply because it is the bottle they most love to open and share with friends and family.
Part of the Iconic Plett Winelands
While many know Plett for its coastline, it is fast becoming famous as the Plett Winelands—South Africa’s smallest and most easterly wine of origin region.
Stretching 57km from Harkerville to The Crags, this "natural amphitheater" is framed by the Tsitsikamma Mountains and the Indian Ocean. Though it accounts for just 58 hectares of South Africa’s total vineyards, the quality is rivaling the best in the Western Cape. Whiskey Creek now stands proudly among the 18 wine farms in this boutique region, contributing to an exciting variety of cultivars including Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and an ever-expanding selection of award-winning bubblies.
