Plettenberg Bay and its surroundings showcase diverse landscapes: forests, fynbos, plantations, Winelands, and coastlines interwoven with trails carefully designed to minimize invasion and maximise enjoyment. Known as the Plett MTB Trails, they now also hold the prestigious title of the world's first internationally recognized Green Flag Status MTB Trails.
These trails offer cyclists a captivating journey through coastal vegetation, navigating the curves and dips along cliff edges, through picturesque pine plantations, meandering paths in the Winelands, and sweeping trails that embrace the enchanting Afromontane forests of the Garden Route National Park. In addition to that, renowned rides like the Dr Evil Classic, Cross Cape Cycle Route, Tour de Plett, and Karoo 2 Coast offer cyclists a taste of the extraordinary trails available in the region. Completing this cycling playground are the beautiful play parks and trails at Cairnbrogie and Sky Trails, adding a beautiful touch to the overall cycling experience. The diverse landscapes and stunning natural surroundings make these rides truly exceptional and unforgettable.
Green Flag Trails is an internationally recognized trail accreditation standard that aims to elevate public awareness and instil confidence in trails. This system is specifically designed to cater to the requirements of trail users, providing comprehensive information about trail specifics, difficulty levels, skill requirements, and trail classification. Implementing this system ensures that trails are well-managed and environmentally responsible, ensuring they continue to be cherished and accessible resources for nature exploration, recreational activities, trail sports, health promotion, tourism, and the numerous benefits they bring to local communities.
At the centre of this development is the launch of the new Plett Trails app that offers a curated collection of Plett’s finest MTB and hiking trails. To create and introduce this app to the international market, the Plett Tourism Association joined forces with Galeo Saintz, the chairman of the World Trails Network and founder of the popular Garden Route Walking Festival. Collaboration with key private stakeholders including SANparks, CapeNature, and the MTO group led to the realization of the world's first Green Flag MTB Trails in Plettenberg Bay.
The world's first Green Flag Status MTB Trails in Plettenberg Bay marks a remarkable achievement in trail development and sustainability. These internationally recognized trails showcase the diverse landscapes of the region, offering cyclists an unforgettable journey. Plett MTB Trails have set the standard for sustainable trail development, inspiring others to follow suit and embrace the beauty of environmentally responsible trail experiences.
