Enhancing Beach Safety and Community Well-being Through Shark Spotting Training in Plettenberg Bay.

Plettenberg Bay, nestled along the Garden Route coastline, is renowned for its breathtaking beaches. Stretching along 20km of Garden Route coastline, Plettenberg Bay boasts 6 Blue Flag status beaches within the oldest marine protected area in South Africa.

The beaches are treasured by both locals and tourists. Yet, occasional shark incidents, despite being infrequent, significantly affect our tourism industry and community, creating lasting repercussions.

In response to the tragic shark attack fatalities In 2022, The Plett Shark Spotters was established. Partnering with Bitou Municipality, Plett Shark Action Group (PSAG) and Cape Town Shark Spotters.

Shark Spotters offers a proactive shark safety service at specific beaches where there's a significant overlap between people and sharks. Using trained observers (spotters) for continuous visual surveillance, they detect sharks and prevent any potential interactions between sharks and beachgoers.

At Plett Getaways we highly prioritize beach safety and the well-being of our vibrant community and holiday visitors. In support of ensuring shark-safe beaches in Plettenberg Bay, we collaborated with Debonairs Plett to sponsor additional shark spotter training for Plett's NSRI lifeguards.
