Good news for everyone who loves a Plett beach day. The Plett Shark Spotters are officially back on duty.
In July, we shared that the programme was temporarily suspending operations. Now the team has confirmed that its Memorandum of Agreement with Bitou Municipality was signed on 5 October 2026. That means trained spotters are back on the sand.
Where and when you’ll find the spotters
For October, the Plett Shark Spotters are on duty at:
- Central Beach
- The Wreck
Both beaches are covered daily from 07:30 to 16:30.
More beaches for summer
The team’s plan is to cover five beaches from November to April, when the summer crowds arrive. Their long-term goal is to keep watch year-round.
What the municipality says
Bitou Municipality has confirmed that the agreement is concluded. It acknowledges the important role the Shark Spotters play in beach safety. The Municipality also says it remains committed to the programme and supports it through its Grant-in-Aid Policy.
How the community helped
Municipal funding helps, but staffing costs still need to be covered by outside support. That’s where the Plett community stepped in.
Local businesses, foundations, events and individuals all chipped in to get the spotters back on the beaches. The Shark Spotters have thanked every one of them. You can see the full list on the Plett Shark Spotters Facebook page.
Every contribution helps keep trained spotters on the beaches. It also supports local jobs, shark safety, monitoring, research, education and conservation.
Plan your beach day
If you’re heading to Plett, you can now enjoy Central Beach and The Wreck with the spotters watching over the water. Always check in with the spotters on the beach for the latest conditions, and look for their flag signals before you swim.
