The Marine Science Symposium

The festival kicks off with a three-day Marine Science Symposium (June 21-23) held at the iconic Beacon Island Resort. Here, renowned scientists and researchers will share their fascinating insights on a variety of topics, including:

  • Decoding dolphin skulls: Learn how these skeletal remains unlock mysteries about dolphin taxonomy and biodiversity with Sibusisiwe Ngqulana.
  • Penguin perspectives: Dive into the underwater world through the eyes of penguins equipped with miniature cameras with Professor Pierre Pistorius, a researcher in marine biology.
  • Gentle giants of the Southern Oceans: Dr Vermeulen will be presenting the latest research on baleen whales in southern Africa.
  • Living on a seabird island: Experience the challenges and rewards of studying endangered Cape gannets on Malgas Island presented by Dr Zanri Strydom.

These are just a few highlights!  The symposium offers a variety of sessions, allowing you to craft a program that aligns with your interests.

A Celebration of Plett's Ocean Bounty

The Plett Ocean Festival isn't just about lectures! The festival offers a variety of exciting outdoor activities and excursions designed to get you out on the water and exploring Plettenberg Bay's rich marine life. Imagine activities like:
