Plett Getaways Tsitsikamma Banner

Planning a Garden Route trip this winter or spring? Here's some good news: the Storms River suspension bridge in the Tsitsikamma section of Garden Route National Park is undergoing repairs, but you won't need to skip it. The bridge is staying open to visitors the entire time.

That means you can still walk across, soak in the views, and get your holiday photos exactly as planned.

Why the Work, and Why It Doesn't Mean Closure

The bridge has spanned the Storms River gorge since 1969, and more than fifty years of coastal exposure means it's due for some serious maintenance. SANParks is handling the upgrades, which cover a few key areas: reinforcing structural components, repairing the concrete and steel supports, and recoating everything to hold up against the salt air.

Rather than shutting the whole thing down, the SANParks team is tackling the work in stages, so foot traffic can continue alongside the construction. You might notice some sections are temporarily rerouted or partially closed—just follow the signage on-site and you'll be fine.

The project was originally meant to finish in June, but a rough patch of winter weather—heavy rain, strong wind, rough seas—pushed things back. The new completion date is the end of August 2026.

A Solid Day Trip from Plett

Storms River Mouth sits about an hour from Plettenberg Bay, making it an easy day trip. Getting to the bridge is part of the appeal: a 2 km boardwalk trail through indigenous forest, opening onto ocean views where the river meets the sea. It's flat and manageable enough for most fitness levels, kids included.

If you're staying at one of our Plett properties, bring your walking shoes and a charged camera—this one's worth the drive.
