Plettenberg Bay is a popular destination for those who enjoy whale spotting and watching.

These magnificent marine mammals are sometimes just metres from the shorebreak and clearly visible for enjoyable shore and cliff based whale watching from points along the coastline from Robberg Peninsula to Keurboomstrand.

Depending on the season, viewers can spot humpback and southern right whales, resident Bryde’s whales and, less commonly, orcas. In the sheltered bay, they mate, calve, rest and play – they’re easy to spot from their blows and enjoyable to watch! Even better to see from the boat of a marine safari! The Plett Ocean Festival (1 – 10 July 2022) is perfectly positioned in the middle of Plett’s high whale season.

But, how to distinguish which whale you’re watching? Browse this handy guide to learn the difference in their exhale blows.
